Introduction

Ready for the fair? Chances are you've just started thinking about a science project of your own one that you can exhibit when the big event takes place. IDEAS FOR SCIENCE FAIR PROJECTS is designed to help you on your way with tips on research, building, planning and that all important problem choosing a topic.

This book was written by students, like yourself, with an interest in science. Ronald Benrey, author of the first section, entered his first science fair when he was in the 9th grade. In 1958, he won a Second Award at the National Science Fair-International and additional recognition from the U. S. Air Force and Future Scientists of America. His project, a model space satellite, was first displayed during the summer of 1957 five months before Sputnik I was launched.

The articles that comprise the Project Section were written by individual winners of the National Science Fair-International and speak eloquently for themselves.

Before you start, let us say that we hope your adventure in science will be a rewarding one. If the projects presented here prove anything, they show that there is immense satisfaction to be gained from independent research, albeit in a basement, a garage or in the kitchen, and with homemade equipment. These drawbacks are not enough to hinder most science fairers indeed, many of the world's great scientists and inventors have worked under similar difficulties. In each case, curiosity overcame the obstacles.
